How to Check ITIN Status Quickly and Easily

Person reviewing ITIN application paperwork, an IRS notification letter, and a calendar while checking application status.

The IRS doesn't offer a public online tracker for ITIN applications the way it does for refunds, so checking status means knowing the normal timeline and when it's genuinely worth calling.

The normal timeline

Standard processing is about seven weeks from when the IRS receives a complete application — up to 9–11 weeks during the January–April filing season, or if you applied from outside the United States.

When to contact the IRS

If it's been longer than the standard window, call the IRS ITIN hotline directly (they can confirm receipt and status by phone). Don't submit a second Form W-7 in the meantime — a duplicate application can create confusion and further delay.

Signs something went wrong

If your documents are returned without an ITIN, the IRS has sent a rejection notice (usually CP566) explaining what's missing or incorrect. Check the application process guide to see what commonly needs correcting, and resubmit as soon as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Will the IRS email or text me my ITIN status?
No — the IRS communicates ITIN matters by mail only. Treat any email or text claiming to be the IRS about your ITIN as a scam.
Can a CAA check my status for me?
Yes, if they're the authorized representative on your original submission, they can call the IRS on your behalf.

Transparency: you can apply directly through the IRS at no cost. TaxGov is an independent Certifying Acceptance Agent service, not a government agency — its assistance is optional.
